Course presentation and objectives

The master’s degree program in Sport Science and Technology (LM68), activated in the 2010-2011 academic year, is an advanced program based on close collaboration with leading national sports organizations and federations. This link ensures a practical and highly specialized approach, enriching the course with exercises in high-level sports centers.

In addition, collaboration with the most prestigious European universities in the field, with which seminars and intensive educational programs funded by the European Community (IP-SPALC; IP-SMEC) are organized, ensures that training is always on the cutting edge.

The objectives of the course were defined with the professional needs of the sports sector in mind, based on research conducted by national and international bodies such as CONI, National Sports Federations, ISTAT, Alma Laurea, AEHESIS and EAS. This approach aims to train qualified professionals for the world of competitive and elite sports, as well as prepare young people for research and academic careers.

The course offers multidisciplinary training, with a focus on bio-medical, psychological, pedagogical and socio-legal aspects of sport. Students can specialize in different sports disciplines, benefiting from the experience of federal coaches and elite athletes. The program emphasizes the dynamics of sports performance, training methodologies, and understanding of physiological and biomechanical adaptations to exercise.

The course also focuses on developing skills in functional assessment of athletes, designing individualized training programs and analyzing the medical, health, nutritional and psychological implications of sport. These skills are critical to meeting the challenges of the field in innovative and responsible ways.

On the practical side, the course includes internships at outside facilities and laboratories, allowing students to apply knowledge in real-world settings. These experiences are complemented by assessments based on reports and projects.

In terms of personal development, the course emphasizes independent judgment and communication skills. Students are encouraged to make independent choices, critically analyzing different approaches to training and sports management. In addition, they acquire skills for effectively communicating goals and working methods, engaging and motivating individuals or groups in various phases of sports activities.

Specific educational objectives of the course include the ability to guide the athlete from young age to sport maturity. This includes knowledge of the scientific and methodological basis of training, functional and sports assessment of the athlete, use of modern technologies, and understanding of biomedical and psycho-pedagogical aspects related to sports.

Practical activities and internships play a central role in the course, with numerous partnerships with National Sports Federations and sports promotion bodies offering a wide range of internship opportunities. In summary, the LM68 course prepares male and female students to become qualified and versatile professionals in the field of sport, providing training that embraces theory and practice and an integrated and responsible approach to sport.

The final proof

The final round of the master’s degree program represents a crucial moment in assessing student learning outcomes. For the award of the Master’s Degree, the submission of a thesis prepared by the student in an original way under the guidance of a supervisor on a topic assigned to the candidate, with his or her consent, in a discipline chosen by him or her from among those in the course of study is required. The final examination consists of the presentation and discussion of a thesis, with no limitation on the number of pages. The final examination may be conducted in English; likewise, the thesis may be written in English. The presentation and discussion of the thesis allow faculty to assess the students’ competence in terms of application of knowledge, comprehension skills, autonomy of judgment and communication skills.

For the thesis, students must:

  • Conduct a thorough literature search, critically analyzing the literature;
  • Develop an experimental hypothesis under the guidance of a teacher, from defining the context and problem to interpreting the data collected.

The content of the thesis may vary between a critical analysis of a specific topic in the literature, an in-depth study of a topic covered during the course, or the elaboration of a project developed during the internship period.

Graduation sessions are organized annually in three periods: summer, fall and winter, following the academic calendar. The methods and timing for assigning the thesis topic and submitting the documentation are defined by the University and communicated in advance. The thesis is submitted either electronically, approved by the online thesis advisor, or orally before a committee of faculty members. After the presentation, students answer questions posed by the committee, which then evaluates the thesis, presentation and discussion, awarding up to a maximum of 11 points.

The commission, based on the overall evaluation that considers the student’s entire journey and the quality of the thesis and presentation, may award honors and propose the nomination for the ‘Giulio Marinozzi Award’ for the best master’s thesis. A special committee, appointed by the Rector, evaluates the theses for the award.

In addition, students who prepare their final exam abroad through international mobility programs can receive 5 CFUs, subject to verification with the relevant offices.

Study Manifesto

Expected learning outcomes
  • know the sports performance model, the methods of technical tactical training, and physical preparation, the methodologies necessary for the conduct and management of sports activities, as well as the methods and tools useful for monitoring the training process and functional evaluation of the athlete;
  • Know and understand the morphological, cellular and molecular changes and adaptations induced by exercise;
  • know the functions of the human organism and understand its adaptation mechanisms in response to the practice, competitive and non-competitive, of different sports activities;
  • possess the ability to answer specific questions posed by training, identifying the quantities of interest and the most convenient methods for measuring and analyzing them.

As a result, the student/student at the end of the course of study is able to:

  • Define the physiological and biomechanical model of a sport specialty
  • Assess an athlete’s functional status according to the demands imposed by the specific performance and, therefore, the specialty model
  • Identify and quantitatively characterize the most appropriate training means and methods for the particular performance pattern
  • Know the characteristics and medical, health, and nutritional implications related to exercise and sports in different contexts
  • know the main psychological and educational issues and understand their implications in the design and implementation of programs of specific sports activities, in observance of the right of citizenship in sports also in view of the development of integrated sports.

In addition to the educational qualification, specific curricular requirements must be met and adequate personal background must be demonstrated.

English language proficiency at level B2 of the Council of Europe’s European Framework of Reference for Modern Languages is required for admission to the degree program.

Admission to the course is determined by evaluating both the previous university curriculum (first cycle) andprofessional or athletic qualifications, if documented in the appropriate form attached to the admission notice.

An Admission Selection Committee will determine any missing mandatory curricular requirements for applicants with an admission qualification other than a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport and Exercise Sciences (Class 33 or L22). These requirements will be notified to interested parties, together with the names of the relevant faculty members, by publication on the University website. Interested students, in order to retrieve them, should make contact with the indicated reference professors to agree on how to acquire them. Student assessment makes it possible to create individualized accompanying pathways. This ensures that, at the beginning of courses, students have a reasonably uniform level of basic skills.

Italian language proficiency is required to enter this master’s degree program, which is conducted in Italian. Foreign students must demonstrate a level of language proficiency at least equivalent to level A2 according to the Council of Europe’s European Framework of Reference for Modern Languages. Passing the language proficiency test is essential for enrollment in the master’s degree program.

The integrally recognized degree program is that in Exercise and Sport Sciences.

For students from other degree programs, the entry requirements are:

  • Basic knowledge of the main biological processes of the structure and functions of the human organism and understanding of their operation at various levels of organization;
  • Basic medical-clinical, health and nutritional knowledge related to exercise and motor activities;
  • Basic knowledge of major psychological and pedagogical issues and understanding of the implications in the design and implementation of physical activity programs;
