The library of the University of Rome “Foro Italico” is open to both internal users (student population, teaching and research staff, technical-administrative staff of the University), and external users, from other universities, schools, institutions and entities, as well as the citizenry interested in the specific library holdings.
The facility is also accessible to users with disabilities and has two stations equipped with low vision lamps and a ClearView C video magnifier.
Bags, sacks and backpacks must be deposited in the lockers provided at the entrance, keeping wallets and valuables with them and following the specific instructions for use displayed near the lockers. Cell phones brought into the library must remain off or on silent mode. No food or beverages may be brought into the library.
On-site reading of one’s own books and documents is also allowed, which must be shown to staff upon entering and leaving the library room.
Modes of lending and consultation
Students of the University and external users can take on loan or consultation a maximum of 3 volumes at a time for 15 days and may request an extension of another 15 days if the text is not already reserved by another user. In case of serious delay in return, the user will be suspended from the services of the Library and the Student Secretary’s Office (formerly Article 6 Sanctions of the Library Regulations).
University faculty and research staff may borrow a maximum of 5 volumes for 30 days and may request two extensions of 30 days each.
Books/documents may be borrowed on short loan – with same-day return – to be photocopied in compliance with copyright law (Law No. 633 of April 22, 1941, as amended), which allows photocopying up to a maximum percentage of 15 percent of each volume or periodical issue, excluding advertising pages. In any case, reproduction of copyrighted material is allowed only for personal and non-commercial use.
Excluded from the loan are:
- reference works (e.g., encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases)
- periodicals
- the videotapes
- the dvds
- the databases on cd-rom
- doctoral dissertations and volumes of the historical fund
- the works in a precarious state of preservation
- books donated to the library under this condition
- Any book that the library staff deems necessary to exclude, with due justification
The lending of videotapes, CD-ROMs and DVDs for projection for educational purposes on the University’s premises, with the exception of videotapes deposited in the library with the proviso that they be viewed exclusively on the University’s premises, is permitted exclusively for teaching and research personnel of the University.
Article request service to other libraries – Document delivery in NILDE
Through the document delivery service, the University library can procure items to which it does not have access for its users by requesting them from other libraries that perform The service free of charge. Requests can be sent to dd.biblioteca@uniroma4.it or through the NILDE service. The first time you use the NILDE platform you must register here [Note: Answer NO to the question about the IDEM-GARR institutional account and continue with registration by entering your University email address]. The document delivery service is for institutional users only.
The library provides items to other libraries on a reciprocal basis free of charge.
Please send requests preferably through NILDE or by writing to dd.biblioteca@uniroma4.it.
Interlibrary loan
The library can request volumes available for interlibrary loan from other Italian libraries. This service is reserved for institutional users and is normally free of charge. In the event of a request from the lending library, the user may be asked to reimburse postage costs. Interlibrary loan requests can be sent to biblioteca@uniroma4.it.
PIM – Metropolitan Interlibrary Loan
The library has joined the Metropolitan Interlibrary Loan (PIM), a cooperative initiative with the Libraries of Rome aimed at the mutual loan of books to users of the two institutions. The service is free of charge and reserved for institutional users of the University of Rome “Foro Italico.”
To request a book present in one of the libraries of the City of Rome, locate the book of interest in the collective catalog BiblioTu and send the interlibrary loan request to biblioteca@uniroma4.it. The volume may be picked up at the University library.
