Third Mission is a relatively recent concept in the Italian university lexicon.
Since its appearance, it has been used to denote the commitment of universities and their departments to the economic enhancement of research and to initiatives with high socio-cultural and educational value, that is, to all activities that have a significant impact on the development of society.
Among the different categories of activities, the University considers it a priority to invest in the initiatives of Public Engagement, without, however, neglecting initiatives in the area of Technology Transfer, of Continuing Education and Sustainability.
The University is committed, through the activities of the Department assisted for operational aspects by the “Foro Italico” University Foundation, to systematize the organization of public engagement activities to enhance the University’s research activities through conferences and seminars open to all, prevention days, classroom and gymnasium training activities, radio and television broadcasts and popular publications.
The Athenaeum, the only one in Italy focused on sports, science and health, intends to continue on the path of public engagement with a view to integration with the local area, specifically promoting physical activity and sports as tools for the health and social and economic well-being of the citizenry. The promotion of physical activity and sports as tools for well-being not only contributes to the improvement of quality of life, but can also have a significant impact on reducing the costs of the public health care system.
Particular attention is paid by the University to strengthening relations between the world of research, the community, schools, institutions and businesses, convinced that circular collaboration among these actors is fundamental to the social, cultural and economic growth of the area.
