In February 2022, the University of Rome “Foro Italico,” the University of Rome “G. d’Annunzio” of Chieti-Pescara, the University of Urbino “Carlo Bo” and the University of Verona signed a framework agreement that sanctioned the birth of the “ITALIAN GROUP ON ADAPTED MOTOR ACTIVITY FOR ONCOLOGICAL PATHOLOGIES, named in English: “ITALIAN GROUP on EXERCISE ONCOLOGY.“.
The idea of establishing “IGEO“, an acronym derived from the initials of the terms in English, arose from the growing interest within the scientific community regarding the important role that Adapted Physical Activity can play in the prevention and treatment of oncological diseases.
In fact, there is an increasing amount of evidence in the literature supporting the usefulness of physical activity in the primary and tertiary prevention of these diseases, an area in which IGEO’s founding universities have been engaged for years with autonomous research, teaching and third mission initiatives.
It therefore seemed appropriate for the 4 universities to join forces with the aim of giving greater impetus to this area, not only with shared research projects aimed at deepening knowledge on the subject, but also through initiatives in the area aimed at promoting adapted motor activity for people with oncological diseases.
The Group’s activities may be carried out through shared research projects, Coordinated Educational Initiatives, relationships with Institutions, public meetings dedicated to the presentation of initiatives, research and scientific literature on the subject, and any other initiative that may be congruent with IGEO’s aims.
The Technology Transfer Office of the University of Rome “Foro Italico” oversaw the registration of the trademark related to the I.G.E.O. Group, which was filed on March 14, 2023 with the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy (Filing Number/Registration Number: 302023000040056) nationwide for the goods classes 35, 41, 42 and 44.
Under Article 9 of the Framework Agreement, which provides for the possibility of membership by other universities/entities (previously authorized by the applicant’s department or institution), the following have joined the IGEO Group: the State University of Milan, the University of Cassino and Lazio Meridionale, the University of Naples “Parthenope,” and the University of Bari “Aldo Moro.”
The identification of IGEO with a registered trademark is increasingly attracting the interest of Universities and researchers involved in Exercise Oncology, highlighting the importance of technology transfer to “network” and disseminate research results to the territory.
In YouTube channel dedicated are available recordings of 3 webinars organized by the “Young” section of the IGEO group aimed at physicians, oncologists, exercise science graduates, patients and caregivers, aimed at enhancing and disseminating the research results of the inter-university team and the importance of prescribing and practicing exercise.
