The Library’s Historical Fund

The Historical Fund, accessible through the Online Catalog, numbers just over 1,000 volumes. The library’s original endowment came from the valuable legacy of the book collections of a number of institutions that succeeded one another in promoting physical education and sport in Italy, starting with the Scuola Normale Femminile di Ginnastica di Torino, founded in 1885. Also present in the historical fund are a number of volumes of periodicals on physical education: Ricerche fatte nel Laboratorio d’anatomia normale della R. University of Rome and in other biological laboratories (1893-1919), Rivista di scienze applicate all’educazione fisica e giovanile (1930-1937), Notiziario di educazione fisica: official organ of the National Association of Physical Education (1949-1978), Italia sportiva: fortnightly of student sports (1951-1958), Scuola, educazione fisica, Sport (1950-1951), Traguardi: quarterly journal of studies on physical education and sports (1957-1973). Possession stamps stamped on the pages of the volumes testify to the entire history.

In the reading room, a number of historical gymnastic apparatuses have been placed – knights, javelin, pole, hoops, medicine balls and balls, Baumann supports, clubs, a tightrope, a proprioceptive platform, strains an eviction ball – and 4 showcases displaying a selection of rare and valuable volumes from the period 1922-1945 inherited from the Fascist Men’s Academy of Physical Education in Rome and from the entities that preceded the University of Rome “Foro Italico” in the work of promoting and teaching physical education in Italy.
