The ‘Guidelines and Operational Directions for Interventions for Students with SLD and Disabilities,’ developed by the Departmental Working Group on Specific Learning Disorders, outline best practices and operational methods to effectively implement:
- More extensive and timely contact with teachers to enable students to communicate their learning needs throughout the course of study, thereby enhancing their overall experience, especially during assessment phases;
- The submission of requests for assessment testing supports (L. 17/1999; L. 170/2010; DM July 12, 2011).
Definitions
Assessment test refers to undergraduate profit examinations (written, oral, computer-based, etc.), tutorials and other forms of assessment of the student’s acquired knowledge and skills.
Students, in this document, are referred to:
- students in possession of diagnostic certification, valid and up-to-date, referred to in L. 170/2010, the State-Regions Agreement of 27.07.2012 and related regional provisions.
- students who are in possession of the certifications:
- of handicap, also in a situation of gravity (art. 3, co 1 or co 3, L. 104/1992);
- of civil disability with a recognized percentage.
Accreditation means the delivery, and subsequent verification, of the certifications already mentioned at the Specialized Tutoring Office (UTS).
By support, we mean the dispensatory or compensatory measures for students with SLD, as referred to in Ministerial Decree July 12, 2011 and the annexed MUR Guidelines, or the provisions of point 2 of Art. 2 of L. 17/1999, which can be granted to students with disabilities to take a university assessment test.
Lecturers
All lecturers post information for students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) and disabilities on their course Moodle channels, specifically:
- The methods for contacting the lecturer to receive guidance and information about the specific course in relation to their individual learning needs;
- The list of permissible supports for the assessment tests of each course.
Students
To request supports for assessment tests (e.g., additional time), students must first register by submitting their documentation as specified by the Office of Specialized Tutoring (UTS) at tutorato.specializzato@uniroma4.it. Simultaneously, students may request, in the manner and timeframe indicated by the UTS, that lecturers be informed of their certification of SLD/disability, including for the purpose of utilizing supports for assessment tests. Students are required to check the allowed supports for a specific course on the lecturer’s Moodle page, paying attention to the related instructions for activation requests (e.g., deadlines, required documentation). Requests for assessment tests supports must be sent by e-mail to the lecturers of the specific course, with the UTS (tutorato.specializzato@uniroma4.it) included in the cc field. Requests for supports must be sent exclusively from the student’s institutional e-mail address and within the timelines indicated on Moodle; late requests will not be considered.
Office of Specialized Tutoring (UTS)
- Provides students with guidance on how and when to become accredited with the UTS.
- Sends lecturers an updated list of accredited students who have requested to report their certification and be eligible for assessment tests supports.
- Assists lecturers in drafting information for students, such as posting on the Moodle pages of their courses.
- Disseminates necessary information to students to maintain their accreditation, including the validity and duration of their certifications, and facilitates contact with faculty.
- Provides information on how students can request assessment tests supports.
In cases of special needs and requests by a student, collaborates with the Dean’s Delegate for Disability, SLD, and Inclusion Support to mediate with the relevant faculty lecturers.
“Allowed” and “Permissible” Supports
Additional time for written and oral assessment tests is an allowed support, always granted to accredited students who request it. Lecturers indicate on their course’s Moodle page the additional permissible supports available upon request to accredited students. These supports are selected from the list below, consistent with the content of the specific educational activity, its objectives, and the nature of the associated assessment tests. The criteria for granting certain supports, as well as the deadlines for their request, may also be specified.
Allowable supports:
- possibility of requesting replacement of the written by an oral test;
- Presence of a reader for the written test;
- Use of a non-scientific calculator;
- request to articulate the exam into several tests to be spread over different
- dates/appeals;
- use of a cheat sheet;
- Use of diagrams/maps during the assessment test;
- possibility of using tables/images without comments and captioning.
