The University of Rome 'Foro Italico' is offering an Open Competition for admission to its post-graduate Doctoral School of Research.

This Open Competition for admission to the post-graduate school of research at the Università degli Studi di Roma 'Foro Italico' will be based on academic qualifications. Admission requirements and selection criteria leading to the formation of a list of applicants can be found below. Study grants funded by external authorities will be assigned upon agreement between the university and the funding bodies. These grants require specific research activity to be carried out and bind the successful candidates to this activity. The number of grants available could be increased in the future with funding from public research or private bodies. Subject to a request from the teaching body, the increase in the number of grants may determine an increase in the number of places. The courses will run from January 2010 and will be for 3 years.

Selection criteria

Selection for the post graduate courses is based on qualifications and exams as specified for each post graduate course in ANNEX A. Candidates will be selected on their preparation, scientific research aptitude and knowledge of one or more foreign languages.

Admission requirements

  1. Applications can be made regardless of age or nationality by students who hold an Italian degree or equivalent from a foreign university which is considered equally valid to an Italian degree by the academic authorities.
  2. For the sole purpose of participation in this open competition, the admissibility of a foreign degree will be assessed by the post-graduate teaching body which requires the candidate to supplement further documentation to the application.
  3. To this end, candidates who hold a foreign degree should attach the following by the closing date for receipt of applications:
    • The degree certificate specifying exams taken. This should be translated and authenticated in Italian
    • Official proof of degree validity issued by the Italian Consulate in the country where the degree was conferred and it should be clear that the degree is valid for the application for admission 'in loco' to the post-graduate research degree course.

  4. ANNEX B, "Information regarding degree courses abroad". All sections have to be completed and signed. In this case the documentation indicated in points 3.1 and 3.2 should be sent by selected students to the appropriate offices by, and not after, 4 months from enrolment in the Doctoral program. Applications falling outside these requirements will be cancelled.
  5. The candidates should possess the necessary qualifications by the closing date for applications. Applications falling outside this requirement will be cancelled. Should candidates not have the necessary requirements when applying, but will have them by the closing date for application, the degree certificate must be submitted by, and not after, the day before the examination.
  6. The administration reserves the right to omit candidates at any time from the selection procedure.

How to apply

Applications should be sent online by, and not after, November 20, 2009 at 13.00 a.m. having filled the application form available from October 21, 2009.

  1. It can be found at http://www.uniroma4.it -> Accesso Rapido -> info stud ->Servizi agli Studenti, then "Accedi" in "Area Riservata e Bacheca Messaggi". Candidates should register providing the necessary personal data and should make a note of, or print, the username and password which will be supplied and which are necessary for future contact. This will then give the candidate access to the site to allow the application process to the Open Competition to be completed. After logging in, click on 'segreteria' and then 'test di ammissione' followed by 'Dottorati di Ricerca', finally click on 'iscrizione' and fill in the necessary modules.
  2. Once this has been completed, it is necessary to confirm the details entered as when this has been completed only personal details can be modified. Should the candidate wish to present further academic qualifications, it is necessary to select the relative section of this application. Candidates who do not yet hold the necessary admission requirements can apply to the Open Competition stating when they intend to have them. The degree must have been conferred by the day before the date fixed for the entrance exam and this should be communicated to the 'Ufficio Dottorati di Ricerca dell'Università degli Studi di Roma "Foro Italico", Piazza Lauro De Bosis 15 , 00135, Roma by the same date date together with the date the degree was conferred and the mark.
  3. The duly signed online application can be:
    • delivered personally to the Ufficio Protocollo at Piazza Lauro De Bosis 15. Open times to the public are: Monday – Friday 10.00 – 13.00 a.m;
    • sent by registered mail with a return-receipt, or private postal service, attaching a copy of the candidate's identity card, to Università degli Studi di Roma "Foro Italico" Ufficio Protocollo, Piazza Lauro de Bosis 15, 00135 Roma by 13.00 0n 20 November 2009. The postal date will not be taken into consideration.

      Should be written clearly written on the envelope.
  4. Any application which does not fall within these requirements will not be considered valid.
  5. All documentation showing academic qualifications should be attached to this application.
  6. Documentation of publications and degree requested in the forms attached (attachment A) should be attached on paper.
  7. All documentation should be in either Italian or English, that is, it is the candidate's responsibility to translate the documentation into Italian or English.
  8. The academic qualifications should be submitted by the closing date for the application.
  9. Disabled candidates should make a specific request if any assistance or extra time is required to complete the entrance exam. The request should be made when filling the application form at the page "altri dati".
  10. The administration assumes no responsibility for any loss of applications due to either incorrect address on the part of the applicant or applicants' change of address or for eventual wrong delivery or force majeure.
  11. Candidates will receive no written communication as far as the Open Competition dates are concerned and proof of identity will be necessary to be admitted to the exam.

Grant holders and non EU applicants that are not applying for scholarship may be admitted to positions over the set number and can be evaluated trough titles, curriculum vitae and the research project alone. To this aim, they should register as described above, indicating in the application form that they are applying for positions over the set number (Art.8) and should attach the following by the closing date for receipt of applications:

  1. Curriculum vitae
  2. The titles translated and authenticated in Italian.
  3. Official proof of degree validity issued by the Italian Consulate in the country where the degree was conferred and it should be clear that the degree is valid for the application for admission 'in loco' to the post-graduate research degree course
  4. A research project written in Italian or English or French.

Instead of documents as in 2) and 3), they can include ANNEX B, "Information regarding degree courses abroad". All sections have to be completed and signed. In this case the documentation indicated in points 2) and 3) should be sent by selected students to the appropriate offices by, and not after, 4 months from enrolment in the Doctoral program. Applications falling outside these requirements will be cancelled.
